Shan Kwong Road Park and Streetscape

5,967 sqm | Hong Kong

The existing park site was redeveloped as part of an adjacent Clubhouse construction project for which slope stabilization and formation of a Means of Escape created an opportunity for revitalization. As part of a place-making approach to the project SCENIC conducted a survey of users in the park and amongst other findings identified the lack of space (and seating space) as key issues of public concern.

The design narrative was inspired by the site location within a valley and the associate park experience of a journey up a hill. Our research identified a Chinese style painting of the locality which captured the embrace of surrounding hills and a sense of interconnection between the natural and man-made. The curvaceous overlapping of forms and colours in the painting were abstract inspiration for the design language for the park; applied to key design features such as gates, paving and railings and a sculpture installation celebrating the Hills of Happy Valley.

An important landscape proposal was to consolidate the lower park entrance at a single location and remodel the entry experience, thereby creating larger and a more defined sequence of entrance spaces. It should be noted that despite the extensive remodeling within the park the design also accommodated the retention of all the existing trees along the route whilst planting several new trees to reinforce the verdant character of the site.
