XRL Topside, West Kowloon

58,800 sqm | Hong Kong

SCENIC were commissioned to prepare the Visual Impact Assessment and Landscape Master Plan in support of the planning application for a new mixed-use development above the West Kowloon Terminus for the Hong Kong Express Rail Link. The objective of the application was to recommend a relaxation of the building height previously approved for the site and create a more iconic development form. Working with architects (Zaha), landscape architects (Gillespies) and  town planning team (Masterplan)  SCENIC were able to prepare a massing model which better responded to the existing urban context, maximised the area of landscape and preserved views of the ridgeline of the Kowloon Hills to the north. The SCENIC team modelled various massing and building height scenarios and tested them using 3-D models to arrive at an optimised scheme. This allowed the proposed scheme to be granted an approval at Section 17 following some resistance at Section 16.
