Public Housing Development at Sheung Shui

The design concept, “Living Landscape in Harmony,” translates the undulating ridges and meandering rivers of Sheung Shui—inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings—into a modern, people-centric environment. This design language transforms natural topography into dynamic architectural rhythms, supporting a robust network of communal spaces. The journey includes Gateway Plaza (the foothill threshold), the Tea House (a forest pavilion), Forest Play areas, and the Flow fitness trails. Together, these elements invite residents on a curated exploration through a living landscape, fostering social cohesion, intergenerational connection, and daily harmony with nature.

The entrance plaza seamlessly transitions pedestrians into the public housing project. The multi-toned paving defines distinct active pathways and passive rest areas. Smooth, organic sculptural seating modules—accented with warm wood slats—are balanced by strategic biophilic framing, including low planters and a dense vertical backdrop of bamboo that provides natural screening.

Organic seating typologies—including matte-white pebble benches and elongated capsule modules topped with timber slats—are curated as sculptural focal points, beautifully balanced by structured concrete planters and a dense vertical backdrop of bamboo that provides a rich, biophilic texture to the clean, minimalist aesthetic.

In high-density social housing, the spaces between buildings hold the greatest power to transform daily life. Landscape architecture elevates public housing from basic infrastructure to a vibrant, human-centric ecosystem.

Thoughtful urban design bridges the gap between density and livability by introducing crucial biophilic elements—such as planting and shade canopies—that mitigate the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and provide direct mental health benefits to residents.
