The Upper South
500 sqm | Hong Kong
SCENIC were appointed as designers for The Upper South in Ap Lei Chau, an eclectic district associated with the art and culture of island life and the vibrancy of Aberdeen Harbour. To reflect this colourful heritage the landscape design approach was based upon a kaleidoscope concept. This inspired the design language for the focal “Crystal Lounge” and related landscape features such as feature screens, custom made light features and paving patterns. There is also an environmental underpinning to the landscape design, with cooling water, shade trellis, tree planting and solar powered fans incorporated to encourage year round use of the podium facilities such as the dining deck and outdoor gym and provision of green features such as green walls, the resident’s farm and herb garden. Although a relatively small deck area, through careful spatial planning and design detailing the landscape has managed to create a linked series of spaces imbued with individual character and interest that together provide a strong identity for the project.

On a compact site, The Upper South creates a strong sense of openness and discovery. Framed by the green hillside to the south, the podium landscape draws light, views and greenery into everyday resident life. Indoor lounges and outdoor spaces are visually connected, making the landscape feel like one continuous setting for living, gathering and unwinding.

A series of sheltered corners, open-air decks and garden rooms offer residents different ways to enjoy the outdoors throughout the day. From quiet seating areas to activity spaces and social pockets, the podium is planned as a compact yet varied wellness journey, with five outdoor rooms connected by clear and comfortable circulation.

Sustainability is woven into the podium experience rather than treated as an add-on. Micro-climate considerations informed the placement of planting, shade and airflow features, helping the outdoor spaces feel more comfortable, usable and inviting across different times of day and seasons.

Visible green technologies strengthen the project’s sustainability story. Solar-powered Air Induction Units and High-Volume Low-Speed Fans are integrated into trellises and walkway roofs, supported by Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Panels. At the resident’s farm, a Dry Leaf Composter turns landscape waste into a practical everyday feature, adding another layer of interest for visitors and residents.

The design takes inspiration from Ap Lei Chau’s island identity and the shifting colours of Aberdeen Harbour. A kaleidoscope concept brings brightness, rhythm and visual energy to the landscape, appearing through the Crystal Lounge, feature screens, bespoke lighting, paving patterns and details across the podium.

Planting gives the podium its softness, depth and close-up appeal. Layered foliage, sculptural forms and seasonal colour create rich foregrounds and textured backdrops while giving residents the feeling of being surrounded by a small but immersive garden.
